a fanlisting?
"A fanlisting is simply an online list of fans of a subject, such as a TV show, actor, or musician, that is created by an individual and open for fans from around the world to join." -TheFanlistings.org There are no costs - all you need to provide is a name, a working email address, and your country.

This is Tomboy, the only fanlisting for the character Kana approved by The Anime Fanlistings Network. It is my hope (if I ever find the time) to make this fanlisting part of a larger shrine, dedicated to the wonders of Haibane Renmei.

who is kana?
Kana is a character in the anime series Haibane Renmei created by Yoshitoshi ABe. She is spirited, outspoken, and rather tomboyish. She's more mechanically inclined than the other Haibanes, and has a particular interest in clocks. She spends most of her free time tinkering with the clock tower at Old Home. She is quite fascinated with it's intricate workings and the mysterious work notes left behind by the clock's previous inhabitant. She works at the clock shop in the center of town as something of an apprentice and hopes to one day fix the clock in Old Home. Kana enjoys riding her bicycle and often she ends up carting other Haibane around like a taxi service! Unlike Rakka, Kana hates crows - she often fights with them over the trash. She sees them as scavengers, and refuses to feed them because she doesn't want them to start relying on her for food. Kana means "river fish", and refers to Kana's cocoon dream in which she was swimming in a river like a fish.

greywing
Haibane Renmei (translated by the author as Charcoal Feather Federation) is a set of original dojinshi written and illustrated by Yoshitoshi ABe (Serial Experiments Lain, NieA_7, Texhnolyze), which was adapted into a 13-episode anime series based on those books. It follows the story of a girl named Rakka, beginning with her dream of falling through the sky and her subsequent birth out of a large cocoon. (In Rakka's dream, a crow tried to stop her fall - as though in an attempt to save her - but it couldn't. This is why she doesn't share Kana's dislike of the crows.) Rakka discovers her place in the world of the Haibane - a race of beings that look human but also resemble angels, with halos and a pair of ash-grey wings. No one truly knows what the Haibane are - not even the Haibane themselves. They have no memory of their previous life, and even their names (traditionally, but not always) are chosen based on the dream they had while in the cocoon.

Rakka, Kana, and several other Haibane live in Old Home (one of two Haibane nests - the other being Waste Factory) in a town called Guri. The town is surrounded by a wall, which no one is allowed to exit through or even touch except for a mysterious group known as the Toga. This group of traders never speak (they communicate through sign language) and never show their faces. Another mysterious organization, the Haibane Renmei, are the apparent protectors of the Haibane. They oversee the Haibanes' lives and their interaction with the townspeople. They also enforce the rules that govern the lives of the Haibane.

Haibane must work, although they are only allowed to do so in a few places. They are not, however, allowed to use money. They are given a notebook by the Haibane Renmei, in which they mark all their transactions - in a fashion similar to writing checks. It is believed that people of the town can then exchange the notes for legal tender with the Haibane Renmei. (The notebook = a check book and the Haibane Renmei = the bank.) The work that the Haibane do presumably provides for the things they need (heating and electricty) by giving back to the town, which pays for these costs. Also, the Haibane are only allowed to use/have second hand things or things they make on their own. All of their possessions must be items that the townspeople no longer want.

The series is mysterious, touching, and highly dimensional in all aspects - specifically the character formation. It's a work of art - that transcends the the normality of most modern-day anime and creates an amazing juxtaposition of surrealism and reality. Identifiable, emotional, and aesthetic, Haibane Renmei has proven to be engaging and thought-provoking. Welcome to a world of love and redemption.
